Like most fans, when the Chicago Bulls drafted Tony Snell out of the university of New mexico with the 20th pick I said to myself, “Who in the hell is this guy?!” Now there are those select few that knew of and were initially a fan of the pick, but those fans are few and far between. Most of us casual NCAA fans were in favor of the big names such as Gorgui Dieng, Tim Hardawy Jr. or my favorite Allen Crabbe. So again I was shocked to say the least.
Right after the pick was made I was all over You Tube. I was destined to find out what the Chicago Bulls seen in this guy.I soon began to see, Snell is very long. His arms appear to hang down to his knees, a very desired quality. His body, although thin, is muscular and lean with plenty of room to add muscle. His shot is beautiful and he appears to have NBA range. He’s quick to close out shooters, another quality NBA teams and Coach Thibs love in a player! Snell at times initiated the offense and brought the ball up the floor, not sure if he’s able to do that at the next level, but still impressive. He just seemed to know were to be at all times on the floor and have a high basketball IQ.
I couldn’t wait to watch his Summer League debut Saturday evening. Playing 33 minutes Snell scored 7 points on 9 shots. The first basket for the bulls was a Snell 3 pointer, it was a big splash. His release is very high and seems to be un-blockable and will be great in catch and shoot situations. I would have liked him to shoot more but his all-around game was impressive. He showed of that length on the defensive end coming up with 3 steals and blocking a big- time dunk attempt! Snell also finished with 3 rebounds and an assist.
He did everything I seen from him at the college level in his first Summer League game. He brought the ball up a couple times, showed his skill on the defensive end and the ability to close out shooters in a hurry. He showed his wiliness to rebound the ball and his shot looked smooth, although I hope he gets more shots up tonight in the Bulls second Summer League game vs. the Nuggets.
I know it’s early and I’m excited over one Summer League game but I think Snell earns minutes and contributes on both ends of the floor right away this season. I think the Bulls made the right pick; his style of play screams Chicago Bulls Basketball.
