Doug McDermott Scouting Report

Birthday: 01/03/92

NBA Position: SF

Height: 6’8

Weight: 225

Hometown: Ames, IA

Side Notes: McDermott attended Creighton University. Was named NCAA National Player of the Year and the John R. Wooden award winner (2014). 5th All-Time on the NCAA scoring list (3,150 points). Scored 45 points on his senior night, and averaged 26.7 PPG his senior year. Three time All-American.

Strengths: The best shooter in this draft. I put his shooting averages below this. Three point shooting is no problem for McDermott, and either is playing in the paint. Exceptional all-around scorer. Doesn’t shy away from rebounding (8.2 RPG his sophomore season). Diverse scoring moves in the post. While he averaged just below 2 assists a game his whole college career; McDermott is a very unselfish player, and hardly forces shots. Constantly plays with energy and heart. Outstanding fundamentals; also has the best basketball I.Q in the draft.  Did I mention this guy can flat out score?

Weaknesses: Unfortunately, McDermott’s biggest weakness is defense. He will have a hard time guarding most small forwards at the NBA level; due to his lack of athleticism. Bigger players have no trouble backing him down. Maybe Thibs can make some improvements? Remarkable low post scorer, BUT has questionable explosiveness driving to the hoop.

NBA Player Comparison: Peja Stojakovic

Summary: McDermott is the wild-card of this draft. I could see him being drafted in the top-8, but then I could also see him falling late into the first round. Chicago needs scoring… and McDermott has undeniable scoring potential in the NBA. However, I think Chicago will pass on him if he drops to the 16th or 19th pick. I see Stojakovic in him because of their scoring abilities, but struggle mightily on defense. Don’t get me wrong, McDermott was the most exciting player to watch in college; though he is not one of my favorite prospects. Chicago will probably have better options once they are on the clock. Expect McDermott to be a solid role player. Below is his noteworthy 45 point game on senior night. Sorry about the quality.
