The drama of this free agency season is just beginning. The headliner of the event, Carmelo Anthony. Melo claimed earlier in the season he wants to opt out of his contract and is ready to take less money to win. News now comes out that we will find out sooner rather than later on his decision to opt out.
According to Marc Berman of the NY Post, a source claims Anthony’s contract states June 23rd is his deadline to let the Knicks know if he will opt out or not. Similar players under the same type of contract have it written up that June 30th is the deadline. Melo having a June 23rd deadline gives teams, as well as the Knicks, more time to game plan before free agency hits on July 1st.
This report is coming on the heals of Phil Jackson revealing to a beat writer the specifics of his meeting with Carmelo Anthony in late April,
“I’ve told him it might be a good idea to hang in here and see what it’s like for a year,’’ Jackson said. “Go out the next year. That’s his option. That’s what he’s earned. It’s part of his contractual agreement. I just offered that this gives you an opportunity to see how this is going to change, how we’re going to get it going.”
Anthony’s response according to Jackson, “I’ll think about it”. If you are Phil Jackson, you can’t feel to comfortable or confident after hearing a response like that from your franchise player. Jackson also talked with Melo about his choice to take over for Woodson at the head coach spot as being Steve Kerr. Phil struck out with Kerr and you have to wonder if Melo is the next loss Phil takes. Making him 0-2 since taking over basketball operations for the Knicks.
