In the wake of the Eric Garner grand jury decision, in which the officer involved in Garner’s death would not be indicted, Derrick Rose takes a stance on the situation. Rose shows his support for the fallen man and the fight against police brutality in America with an “I can’t breathe” shirt during warmups in Saturday’s game vs Golden State. “I can’t breathe” were the last words Erick Garner was heard saying as he was put in a choke hold by an officer, before his death.
Both the, Eric Garner and Mike Brown incidents, have caused the entire nation, no matter what their stance is, to focus on police and their actions when dealing with race and brutality in America. A few agencies, due to the protests around the nation, are in the beginning stages of arming their officers with video recording devices to hopefully avoid circumstances like these in the future. Derrick Rose is the first athlete to show such support publicly on a national platform.
Rose, known for his support within Chicago against violence and has also helped to pay for 6 month old Jonylah Watkins’ funeral, who was shot and killed while getting her diaper changed by her father in the front seat of their minivan. Rose has also donated $1 million to the After School Matters, an after school non-profit orginazation based in Chicago.
