Bulls Game Highlights
Bulls (27-14)- 119
Celtics (13-25)- 103
The Chicago Bulls are in a bit of a rut. Coming of a loss to Washington, the Bulls would travel to Boston and handle business vs the Celtics. Although, they wouldn’t get going until the second half of play.
Defense has been a question mark all season for the Bulls. In the first half of play the Celtics shot 60% from the field and an impressive 50% from behind the arc, taking a 58-55 lead into the half. Chicago was showing signs of the same struggles. Failure to get going, looking lackadaisical on defense, and not shooting the ball particularly well.
The second half was a different story however. The Bulls would lock down the defensive end. Close out on shots, and use defensive pressure to ignite things on the offensive side of the ball. Derrick Rose had by far the best night of his season. The first half he was aggressive, attacking the basket, but would shoot a mere 4-11 from the floor and head to the locker room with 9 points. His game in the second half was magical. Rose would shoot 8-9 from the field and connect on 4 of his 5 three pointers and dropped 20 points in the second half of action. Most impressive of all was his assist to turnover differential for the game. Rose had 10 assists with zero turnovers in 33 minutes of action, finishing with 29 points. He looked in control and confident from the initial jump ball.
Pau Gasol just continues to impress. Securing his 22nd double double of the season, Gasol scored 20 points and grabbed 11 boards. Jimmy Butler also got back into the swing of things scoring 22 points, with 6 steals, and 5 boards. For the 3rd time this season the Chicago Bulls have had 3 players score 20 points or more in the same game. All resulting in wins.
Joakim Noah would miss tonight’s game with a bum ankle, and is scheduled for an MRI. Taj Gibson would get the start in his place and make his presence felt with toughness and strong interior play. Gibson drop 13 points, while grabbing 8 rebounds in 39 minutes of action. Kirk Hinrich would start at the 2 guard spot and contribute 6 points in 34 minutes.
Aaron Brooks had a nice outing, leading the way off the bench with 15 points. Followed by E’Twaun Moore with 9, and Mirotic with 5.
Sullinger- 20 points, 8 rebounds
Zeller- 12 points, 6 rebounds
Turner- 11 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds
Bass- 16 points, 5 rebounds
Olynyk- 14 points, 9 rebounds
Thibs on Rose- “It’s important for him to keep us playing at a good pace. He doesn’t have to score the ball, but he has to make sure that we’re playing with a good pace all the time.’’
Rose- “It was big because it was the next game, and Friday we came out from the beginning and just tried to improve on the intensity side and make sure we really got into the ball. I’m just trying to pick and choose throughout the entire game to play the way I normally play. Trying not to force it, trying not to mess with the game.’’
Thibs- “What you’re seeing is Derrick is getting stronger and stronger. He’s gaining confidence and getting that competitive edge. When you’re out as long as he has been out, you miss that part also. You’re going against a great player every night. You can start to see it’s coming.”
Butler- “They’re all the right shots and the shots I work on constantly. That’s the most frustrating part. I’m not going outside my game and taking shots I can’t make. You just have to have the mindset that they’re going to fall because I put so much time in. I really believe that”
Up Next for Chicago- The Bulls are now 5 1/2 games back in the East behind the first place Atlanta Hawks, who come to town Saturday to face off with the Bulls.
Magic (14-27)- 121
Bulls (26-13)- 114
It’s apparent by the final score that the Bulls offensive woes ended this game. The Bulls would finish the game shooting the ball at 48% from the field. The problem with that, they allowed the Orlando Magic to light the United Center up with a 59% shooting performance. Chicago ranks 4th in the NBA in opponents FG % prior to this game at 43%.
The Bulls had no answer for Nikola Vucevic or Victor Oladipo. Both scoring 33 points in the contest and dominating the game. Pau Gasol matched up vs Vucevic the majority of the game. While Joakim Noah, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, spent his time trying to contain Channing Frye. Which Noah did with ease. Frye was 2-10 with 5 points and 5 rebounds in 36 minutes of play.
Derrick Rose would return to action after resting his knee vs the Bucks, and immediately going into attack mode. Prior to the game Rose joked that this may be a different game then we have seen recently, and it may be due to the fact that he got a haircut. Well, haircut or not, this was a different Rose. Derrick would attempt 9 of his 15 shots from inside of 15 feet, and go 5-6 around the rim. Rose finished with 18 points, 7 assists, and 2 rebounds.
Jimmy Butler has been quiet as of late, but still effective. The absence of Mike Dunleavy has him playing what some thought was his natural position at SF. However, he has averaged just 14 ppg while shooting a below average 31% from the field since Mike has been out. In games this season with Dunleavy, Butler shot the ball 48% from the field while averaging 21 ppg. Butler scored 17 points (5-13 shooting), vs the Magic on Monday night.
Pau Gasol would get dominated on the defensive side of the ball, but gave his far share of counter attacks back offensively. Gasol scored 28 points (10-16) and added 14 rebounds. Joakim Noah, who hasn’t been a scoring threat since the end of the regular season last year, dropped 6 points and 7 rebounds.
Mirotic and Brooks came off the bench and provided a 4th quarter spark for Chicago. Niko shows his ability to dominate just about any opponent with his offensive skill set, scored 11 points in 11 minutes and grabbed 2 boards. Aaron Brooks added 12 points and 4 assists, and continues to make the Bulls front office look smart for their continual pick up of back up point guards that can get buckets.
Chicago is playing their worst stretch of basketball all year. With the offense finally showing signs of life, it’s up to this defense to find its way. No championship caliber team should let a young, inexperienced Magic team come into their arena and drop 121 points. Ever.
Vucevic- 33 points, 11 rebounds
Oladipo- 33 points, 2 assists
Payton- 10 points, 7 assists, 2 steals
Gasol- “I am upset. We’ve given away too many home games against teams that we shouldn’t and that has to stop.”
Thibs- “Either you’re in the circle or you’re out. You want to be in? Let’s go. You don’t want to be in? That’s fine too. Let’s go.”
Thibs- “If you want to do something special, there’s a serious price to pay. And there’s no getting around the work. It’s that simple.”
Rose on knee soreness- “I know exactly what it is,” Rose said about experiencing soreness. “I know how to warm up my body. I think I’ve become a great pro, and having two knee injuries you really learn how to take care of your body. I think I’m doing a great job with it.”
Up next for Chicago- Wall and the Wizards come to town for the “Ultimate PG Duel 3”
Bucks (20-19)- 87
Bulls (26-12)- 95
The Bulls were without Rose (soreness in left knee) Saturday night against the Bucks. However, the play of Pau Gasol made the entire Bulls fan base forget who Derrick Rose was for at least 48 minutes. Gasol scored a career high 46 points to go along with an outstanding 18 rebounds, and 3 assists. Pau looked like a 25-year-old rising star again, finding his way to the basket with ease. Whether it was a 20 footer, a pump fake and drive from behind the arc, or a shimmy move in the post for a hook across the lane, Gasol had it going on all night.
Kirk Hinrich would get the start in place of Rose and had one of his better games of the season. Scoring 16 points on 7-13 shooting, grabbing 3 rebounds, and dishing out 3 assists.
Jimmy Butler, wasn’t looking for his shot as much as he was looking to get his team involved. Butler scored 9 points of 2-9 shooting. But, handed out 10 assists and attacked the boards, grabbing 8.
Chicago dominated on the boards, out rebounding the Bucks 51-37. Although the Bulls continue to struggle to find their shooting touch since the Rockets game, what they did tonight defensively as well as in the rebounding department, helped them cruise to a 8 point victory vs Milwaukee.
Knight- 20 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds
Dudley- 15 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds
Middleton- 11 points, 5 rebounds
Mayo- 12 points, 2 rebounds
Thibs on Gasol- “He wasn’t going to let us lose tonight.”
Gasol- “My teammates found me in good positions.”
Gibson- “It’s just one of those nights where you got to throw everybody at him (Gasol), and they (Bucks defense) just didn’t do that right away.”
Up next for Chicago: Bulls host the Magic on Monday
Bulls (25-12)- 86
Wizards (25-12)- 102
Coming off their worst loss of the season to the Utah Jazz (yeah we purposely skipped that recap), the Chicago Bulls lay another dud vs the Washington Wizards. Chicago just looked flat once again. The first quarter, in which Chicago was outscored 30-13, the Bulls were already too far in the hole, to dig themselves out.
Jimmy was quieted (10pts) by Paul Pierce once again. Butler now has averaged 10.5 ppg vs the Wizards this season, shooting 6-24 from the field in the 2 games.
Derrick Rose had his best game in about 2 weeks. Scoring a team high 19 points on 8-19 shooting, (1-7 from three). Rose also grabbed 4 rebounds, but dished out just 2 assists.
Chicago’s big men were dominated by the Wizards’ interior. Pau Gasol, who looked worn down and only somewhat into this game, scored 12 points to go along with his 13 rebounds. Joakim Noah’s struggles continue, as he was held to just 3 points and 10 rebounds. Once again dominated by Nene.
Aaron Brooks came off the bench and created a spark, helping the Bulls pull to within 6 points in the 3rd quarter, before Washington went on another quick run to extend the lead to 12. Brooks would score 16 ponts. Taj Gibson scored 2 points and grabbed 3 rebounds, while Mirotic added 6. Tony Snell received quiet a bit of floor time tonight, in his 18 minutes of play he dropped 9 points, 1 rebound, and an impressive 4 steals.
Wall- 16 points, 12 assists, 4 rebounds
Beal- 17 points, 4 assists
Gortat- 21 points, 13 rebounds
Nene- 15 points, 11 rebounds
R. Butler- 13 points (3-5 from three)
Rose on the slow start- “Energy once again. Just got to figure it out.’’
Noah on his lingering knee- “I’ll be alright. Just keep working. I’m a worker and I’m never going to stop until I get it right.’’
Thibs on Noah’s knees- “Just as he gets his timing, continues to strengthen his leg. All that stuff takes a lot of time. And you can’t get frustrated with it. You’ve got to just keep on working, and it will get better.’’
Up next for Chicago- Back home to take on the Bucks on Saturday
Source- Chicago Sun-Times
Rockets (23-11)- 105
Bulls (25-10)- 114
Jimmy Butler returned to action against the Rockets, and forced James Harden to go 0-9 from the field in the second half. In a game that had a playoff type atmosphere, Jimmy rose to the challenge, winning the first round of “Battle of the MVP candidates”. Jimmy scored 22 points, grabbed 5 boards, 3 steals, and one emphatic block. However, the most eyeopening stat was his personal fouls. Jimmy ended the game with zero against James Harden, who leads the NBA at free throws attempted this season.
Chicago looked as good tonight, as they have all season. Scoring 62 first half points, and clicking on all cylinders. The Bulls out-rebounded Houston 47-40 (25-20 offensive), and it was the length of Mirotic, Noah, and Pau, on the court at the same time, that Thibodeau found most effective.
Derrick Rose went into early attack mode, causing the defense to help, to adjust, which opened passing lanes and wide open shots for Derrick’s teammates. Rose would finish with 19 points, 9 assists, and 3 rebounds, as he went head-to-head with fellow Chicago-native, Patrick Beverley.
Mirotic wouldn’t continue his streak of starts, however, he would prove to be just as vital an asset coming off the bench for Chicago, scoring 17 points with 8 rebounds. No point bigger than his clutch 3 to put the Bulls up 7 with 40 seconds left in regulation.
Joakim Noah was very active vs the bigger Dwight Howard scoring 8 points and 10 rebounds, while holding Howard to just 12 and 14. Pau Gasol once again, leads this Bulls team through the trenches and to victory with his game high 27 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 blocks.
Taj Gibson would score 9 points off the bench, while Kirk would add 10, and Aaron Brooks dropped just 2 in an off night.
Harden- 20 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds
Howard- 12 points, 14 rebounds
Montlejunas- 16 points, 6 rebounds
Beverley- 14 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists
Mirotic- “I have to say thanks to the coach because he trusted me. He let me play the last minutes.”
Howard on Butler- “He should be up there in the MVP running. He’s playing great basketball. He’s been one of the most consistent players all season. He’s scoring, playing defense, making game-winners. He’s having an unbelievable season. It’s like, ‘Where did he come from?’ “
Pau- “I like what we have. I like the way we’re doing things. I like our potential. Our potential, I think, is incredible.”
Up Next for Chicago: Gordon Hayward and the Jazz come to town on Wednesday.
Celtics (11-20)- 104
Bulls (24-10)- 109
Chicago was without Mike Dunleavy (ankle) and Jimmy Butler (bereavement), however Pau Gasol played out of his mind to make up the slack on the missing starters. Pau scored 29 points, 16 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Pau moves into the top 3 in blocks per game for the NBA.
Derrick Rose continues to struggle, scoring 12 points on 5-18 shooting, with 1 assist, 1 rebound, and 4 turnovers. Aaron Brooks on the other hand, came off the bench and scored 19 points for Chicago, adding 4 rebounds, and some critical run stopping baskets. Kirk Hinrich, starting for the missing Butler, dropped in 8 points (0-8 from 3) with 5 rebounds.
Nikola Mirotic would get his first NBA start, and would do so at the SF position for Mike Dunleavy. Matched up against one of the more athletic SF in the league in Jeff Green, Niko played well. Although his shot wasn’t falling (2-10), he did get to the free-throw line for 5 of his 10 points. He also added 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. His counterpart would score just 11 points on 4-18 shooting against the rookie stretch 4 turned SF.
Chicago shot just 37% from the field, making the shooting woes not only on Derrick, but the entire team outside of Pau, is struggling to hit a shot. However, the continue to get to the line (40 attempts), and dominate on the glass night after night. Out rebounding the Celtics 59-45, with 24 of those rebounds being offensive boards.
Turner- 29 points 6 assists 7 turnovers
Bradley- 17 points 0 assists
Sullinger- 16 points 16 rebounds
Green- 11 points 9 rebounds
Zeller- 10 points 1 rebound
Noah- “He’s (Pau) playing really good basketball for us and he definitely adds a very different, unique and very positive dimension to our team.”
Gasol- “I do see it, (Bulls title shot). That’s why I came here. I didn’t come here for any other reason.”
Thibs on Pau- “He’s so long. He’s got great timing and great intelligence, He reads things extremely well.”
Up Next for Chicago- Harden and the Rockets come to town for a SG duel on Monday.
Nuggets (13-20)- 101
Bulls (23-10)- 106
Derrick Rose would look to redeem himself, after playing just 10 minutes in his previous matchup vs Denver. Rose would look similar to that same player we saw in Denver for the first, three quarters of action. Shooting just 2-14 with 4 points, before going 5-9 in the 4th. A step back 20 footer with just over a minute left, was the nail in the coffin for the Nuggets.
Although the game was close, the Bulls looked like the dominate team tonight, in Chicago. A rarity for the Bulls this season, with a home record of 9-6. For a Bulls team, that in the past has been known for their dominate play at home, that home record is nothing to smile about. After a bad loss to the Brooklyn Nets, and a horrific last 5 quarters of basketball, the Bulls looked back on track vs the Nuggets.
Jimmy Butler and Pau Gasol continue to prove their value to the Bulls success, as they once again pick up the slack for a struggling Rose. Jimmy would finish with a game high 26 points, and added 8 rebounds, with 8 assists. Pau Gasol has found the fountain of youth in Chicago, coming ever so close to a triple double with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists.
Kirk Hinrich returned to action tonight and made a very nice contribution. He would score 10 points on 4-4 shooting (2-2 from three). While Aaron Brooks added 12 points and handed out 4 assists. Rose would get credit for 8 assists, while scoring 17 points (13 in the 4th).
Faried- 18 points 19 rebounds
Chandler- 22 points 3 rebounds
Lawson- 20 points 7 assists 7 rebounds
Afflalo- 19 points 4 rebounds
Rose- “My mentality is not going to change. I’m a scoring guard. I’m going to keep shooting.”
Thibs- “He (Rose) won’t be the first player or last player to go through a slump, It happens. He’s got to work his way out of it.”
Rose on stare down after hitting the stepback- “It wasn’t the players. I think it was the coaches…..heard the coaches saying something.”
Up next for Chicago: Back at the UC on Saturday, to welcome the Rondo-less Celtics to town.
Nets (15-16)- 96
Bulls (22-10)- 82
For the first time since December 15th, the Chicago Bulls fail to grab a win. After finishing the first quarter with a 34-21 lead, Chicago all but layed an egg for the rest of the game. It carried over from the 4th quarter of the Indiana game the night before. Guys couldn’t hit shots. Settling for jumpers instead of attacking the rim. Aaron Brooks’ second quarter ejection didn’t help things either.
Mike Dunleavy was a bright spot in the game for Chicago. He came out of hiding and dropped 23 points on 5-9 shooting from behind the arc. Twelve of his points came in the first quarter in which Chicago looked in control, and poised to continue their winning streak.
Joakim Noah had a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 boards. While Pau Gasol added 10 points and 7 rebounds. Tony Snell broke his 14 game streak of scoreless games, dropping three, three-pointers to give him 9 points.
The struggle of Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler, killed the Bulls tonight. The two star players combined for 12 points (Rose 4, Jimmy 8), 6 assists, and 7 rebounds. They shot the ball 18% (5-27) and 0-8 from three. Also, totaled 7 turnovers. The worst outing by these two in recent memory.
Lopez- 29 points 5 rebounds
Johnson- 20 points 11 rebounds
Jack- 11 points 5 assists
Rose- “My confidence to shoot is there. All of them were on target. They’re just not falling. I’m not going to stop shooting. If they go under (screens), I’m going to shoot the shot. I work on it enough. I just haven’t seen them go in yet.”
Rose- “It’s the first game it’s been like this. Usually it’s me by myself missing shots, everybody else making shots. Just to see the whole team miss shots is something we haven’t seen before.’’
Thibs- “If the defense is collapsing and the play is made, and it’s the right shot, I’m going to encourage him to take it. The 3-pointer is an important part of our game. That’s what opens it up inside.”
Up Next for Chicago- A New Year’s day matchup at home vs the Denver Nuggets
Bulls (22-9)- 92
Pacers (11-20)- 90
The night he was announced Eastern Conference Player of the Week, Jimmy Butler once again comes to the rescue for the Chicago Bulls as they win their 7th straight.
After leading most of the game, and at one point by 20 points, the Bulls found themselves down with just over a minute remaining in the game. Jimmy Butler drains a three pointer to put the Bulls up, and on the ensuing possession, causes a Pacer turnover, which ultimately sealed the game.
Chicago took an 81-65 lead into the fourth quarter. Chicago being the top team in the league in point differential in the 4th quarter, all seemed good for the Bulls. However, shots were short, guys looked tired, and Indiana couldn’t miss. Chicago went scoreless for 7 minutes and 21 seconds of the fourth quarter before Pau Gasol hit a 17 foot jumper to end the drought.
Jimmy Butler continues to be this team’s MVP, whether he wants to admit it or not, scoring game high 27 points and added 9 rebounds for good measure. Mike Dunleavy, who recently has been very quiet scored 8 points and grabbed 10 boards.
After struggling to get others involved, Derrick Rose dished out 6 assists and scored 17 points. His shot looked flat, especially from behind the arc, and had the worst outing he’s had since returning from the flu.
Pau would add 20 points and 6 boards, while Joakim scored 6 points with 7 rebounds. The bench for Chicago, didn’t have much of an effect on the game like the have in recent games, totaling just 14 points and 11 rebounds.
West- 10 points 7 rebounds
S. Hill- 10 points 3 assists
G. Hill- 11 points 4 assists
Hibbert- 6 points 3 rebounds
Copeland- 17 points 5 rebounds
Butler- “Derrick Rose is always on me to shoot and to shoot 3’s and be aggressive. I’m confident in my game, so I feel like I have to step up and take and make shots late.”
Thibs- “The lesson we learned is you have to keep playing. No lead is safe in this league.”
Vogel on Butler- “I don’t think anybody expected this kind of explosion from him. Everybody had great respect for him. But obviously, he’s burst onto the scene.”
Up Next for Chicago- Back at home for a Tuesday night showdown with KG and the Nets
Pelicans (15-15)- 100
Bulls (21-9)- 107
It’s no secret now that Jimmy Butler made a huge leap this season. For the 5th time this year, Jimmy scored above 30pts in a game. Getting it done all over the court tonight, he would score, 33 points, grab 5 rebounds, with 2 assists, and two steals. Jimmy shot 66% (12-18) from the field and continued to get it done at the line going 9-10.
Derrick Rose looks more and more like his old self as the season goes on. Although his assist numbers seem to be struggling, it’s important that he is confident in his shot and ability to score. Rose ended up with 19 points, 1 assist, and 1 rebound. Rose even threw down a dunk for good measure. His second during a regular season game since tearing his ACL.
This game was close throughout. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Bulls, led by Jimmy Butler and Derrick Rose, pulled away from New Orleans. Pau Gasol, and Joakim Noah had quiet nights offensively with Pau scoring 8 points with 9 rebounds, and Jo added 7 points to go along with his 9 rebounds. It was the bench play that gave assistance to Jimmy and Derrick. Taj leading the charge with 12 points and 10 rebounds. While Nikola Mirotic ended up with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Aaron Brooks, although he may have had a rough night shooting, made key baskets at different intervals of the game. He would end up with 13 points and 4 assists.
Davis- 29 points 11 rebounds
Evans- 26 points 5 rebounds 5 assists
Holiday- 19 points 7 assists
Anderson- 13 points 5 rebounds
Thibs- “I thought our bench gave us a great lift, and then down the stretch, Derrick and Jimmy made one big play after the next.”
Noah on Butler- “Not only is he a great scorer, but he’s a top defender. Like top, like defensive player of the year type of defender”
Thibs on Niko at SF- “I just wanted to get a look at it. It was a start. I want to look at the film.”
Next up for the Bulls: A trip to Indiana to face the Pacers on Monday
Lakers (9-20)- 93
Bulls (20-9)- 113
Pau Gasol would play his old team for the first time since signing with Chicago and had a very good outing. A game high 23 pts to go along with 13 rebounds, Pau looked unstoppable. Doing so in 33 minutes of play, going 1-1 from behind the arc, and 9-14 from the field. It is going to be hard to keep him out of the All-Star game if he continues this level of play. Once again, Gasol proves to be one of the best pickups of the offseason.
Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler were right behind Pau with Rose scoring 20 pts and 6 assists. Jimmy Butler continues his breakout season with 21 pts, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Chicago looked in control for the entire game. LA would have to play without Kobe Bryant and from the start never stood a chance against this Bulls team that seems to be clicking on all cylinders.
The offense was clicking, the ball was moving, Bulls out rebounded the Lakers 57-39. Chicago shot 48% from the field, while LA struggled to shoot 39%. It was a good win on Christmas for the Bulls, who now have won 5 straight.
Johnson- 19 pts 9 reb
Hill- 16 pts 6 reb
Davis- 13 pts 14 reb
Boozer- 14 pts 5 reb
Ellington- 12pts 2 assists
Noah- “Right now there’s a belief, a lot more than there was a couple weeks ago. As a player, there’s nothing better than having that belief that when we’re on and competing, nobody can mess with us. That’s the feeling that we’re starting to get.”
Bryant- “I’m just happy to see him (Rose) out there playing and being aggressive. It’s hard to have an injury like that because it’s such a freak situation. A drive to the basket can scare you because you’re scared to make the same move. But he looks like he’s put that in the back of his mind and is playing aggressive.”
Thibs- “The start of the fourth quarter, the reserves helped build the lead and build a cushion. You’re hoping you can hold what was established. And they’re not only holding, they’re building.”
Gasol on Rose- “The opponent has to be aware of his ability to get into the lane and create and score. The defense has to react and adjust. It’s always positive to see him attack.”
Up Next for Chicago: Anthony Davis and the Pelicans come to town on Dec 27th.
Bulls (19-9)- 99
Wizards (19-8)- 91
Chicago traveled to the Nation’s Capital to take it’s 7th game in its last 8. Derrick Rose would lead the way for the Bulls with, 25 pt, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Rose is now 5-0 vs John Wall and the Wizards.
It was a battle between Rose and Wall, with Derrick Rose getting the last punch. John Wall started the game a bit timid. He didn’t look to attack Rose until the second half, when the gloves came off. Rose and Wall looked like two boxing heavy weights trading bucket for bucket, looking to see who had more down the stretch. Rose would finally put the nail in the coffin with an 18 footer near the top of the key with just under 2 minutes remaining.
Rose would show a rare side of him as had an exaggerated strut down the court to the bench after the shot. “I never celebrate. My emotions just came out,” Rose said of his celebratory walk.
Pau Gasol would add in his daily 18 pts and 9 rebounds. Joakim Noah, who is slowly but surely getting his bounce back, scored 8 pts to go with his 11 rebounds. Jimmy Butler hit just 4 of his 13 attempts from the floor, and had somewhat of a quiet game with 11pts and 6 rebounds. Prior to this season, that would be a regular game for Jimmy Butler. His contributions this season have been a major reason for the Bulls success so far.
Taj Gibson and Aaron Brooks contributed nicely off the bench. Taj, coming back from an ankle injury, had 7 rebounds to go along with his 12 pts. Aaron Brooks saw more time with Hinrich out (hamstring), scoring 13 pts and assisting on a team high, 6 baskets.
Wall- 18 pts 9 assist
Beal- 15 pts 3 reb
Gortat- 14 pts 11 reb
Pierce- 12 pts 5 reb
Rose- “You saw two people go at it tonight, two good teams.”
Wall- “Everybody is going to make it a big rivalry. I know every time I go against any good point guard it’s going to be a big one. It’s fun to have him back out there.”
Dunleavy on Rose- “He has his swag back. He’s doing it in the fourth quarter against really good teams. It’s good to see that look on his face and the look in his eyes.”
Noah- “It’s real,” Joakim Noah said. “The Chicago Bulls are getting healthy. The sky’s the limit for this team. It’s going to be a special year.”
Raptors (22-7)- 120
Bulls (18-9)- 129
It was the kind of night we had all been waiting for. Rose took over the fourth quarter, MVP chants, and the Bulls going 2-0 on the season against the top seed in the East. Derrick Rose in his first game back after missing two with the flu, scored 29 pts on 12/19 shooting. Just when the Bulls needed their former MVP to put the game away, Rose did just that with a clutch jumper with 1:17 left to put the game out of reach 118-105.
Toronto came into the United Center with a 6-game winning streak. With a few days off and a healthy lineup Chicago was ready to show this home crowd exactly what they have in store this season. Although the 2nd quarter and part of the 3rd were quiet ugly, Chicago was able to bounce back by turning to their starters to get the job done. Scoring a franchise high 49 points in the 4th quarter, 69-54 in the second half.
Mirotic, after his career game on Friday, played 18 minutes and contributed 12 points (7-8 FT). Jimmy Butler continued his All-Star level play, scoring 27 points and adding 11 rebounds. Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah added 14 a piece, while Aaron Brooks contributed 17 off the bench. Taj Gibson, like Rose, would return this game to score 10 points to go along with 7 rebounds.
Lowery- 34 pts 6 asssist
Valanciunas- 20pts 9 rebounds
Ross- 17 pts
Johnson- 16 pts
Next Up for Chicago: Bulls head to the Nation’s Capital tomorrow to face the Wizards
Bulls (17-9)- 103
Grizzlies (21-5)- 97
Chicago once again was without Derrick Rose, and this time against a Western Conference powerhouse in the Memphis Grizzlies. Jimmy Butler shows up once again to lead the charge. As he continues to carry this Bulls team throughout the start of this season. Bulls defeat the Grizzlies by a final of 103-97 and now have won 5 out of their last 6.
Scoring over 30 pts for the second game in a row, Jimmy Butler had it going on, on all cylinders once again tonight. A final tally of 31 points on 11-21 shooting (9-9 FT). Adding 10 rebounds to get his first double-double of the season. With defensive star Tony Allen not in the lineup for Memphis, Jimmy was free do do what he wanted on the offensive side of the ball.
Nikola Mirotic stepped in for the injured Taj Gibson (right ankle) and scored a season high 27 points, while dropping 6 of 6 from behind the arc. Talks now of not only Jimmy potentially becoming an MVP candidate if he continues this level of play, but also Mirotic getting in the mix for Rookie of the Year talks. However, once the front court is fully healthy, it’s going to be hard for the rookie to see double digit minutes in a game.
Joakim Noah in his second game back scored 10 pts and added 13 rebounds, as teammate Pau Gasol contributed just 6 pts and 11 rebounds. Aaron Brooks came off the bench and provided a nice lift with 17 pts, which is becoming the norm from him when Rose is out.
After the game Joakim Noah talked about Jimmy’s confidence,
“Jimmy has been unreal for us this year. I don’t even know what to say. I remember him working out in the summer and shooting shots off one foot. And I was like, ‘Jimmy, what are you doing? You’re not going to shoot shots off one foot.’ He’s shooting shots off one foot against the No. 1 team in the NBA in the fourth quarter with the game on the line. It just shows the confidence he has in himself. You just saw him growing and getting better every game.”
With Rose out, Conley had his way with the Bulls back court dropping 21 points. Marc Gasol added 13pts and 10 rebounds. Winning the head to head matchup against his seemingly exhausted brother.
Up Next for the Bulls: The Eastern Conference leading Raptors come to town on Monday.
Knicks (5-23)- 97
Bulls (16-9)- 103
With no Derrick Rose or Carmelo Anthony, the match up between the Bulls and Knicks took a serious dive in the excitement category. However, Jimmy Butler’s career high 35pts provided the lift the Bulls needed to get past the 5-23 New York Knicks.
On a National televised game, Butler played at a star level. There was an ongoing debate between Reggie Miller and Charles Barkley all game on whether Butler was a star or a role player. With a stat line of 35pts, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 blocks, it looks as though Reggie got it right with this one. After the game Butler said, “I don’t want to be a star. I just want to be a decent role player on a really good team.” Well, he can check that off his to do list. Because Jimmy Butler has proven he is more than just a “decent role player”.
Pau Gasol continues his impressive season, scoring 20pts and adding 7 rebounds. Although Pau at times this season has looked sluggish defensively, it’s what he does collectively for this team that is so valuable. Averaging, 18.7 ppg (the most since 2010-11) and a career high 11.9 rebounds per game.
After missing 4 games, Joakim Noah returned to the court to contribute 4pts and 13 rebounds. Aaron Brooks came off the bench and provided his normal spark with 18 pts, hitting 5-6 shots from behind the arc. Fellow “bench mob member” Nikola Mirotic added 13.
Taj Gibson was also dressed in street clothes, as he sat out nursing that injured ankle. He will travel with the Bulls to Memphis, however, Derrick Rose will stay behind. There is a possibility Rose could join the team later on tomorrow.
After the game Thibs had nothing but high praises for his future All-Star, “All I can say is thank God for Jimmy Butler. You can’t say enough about him.” Who knows where this team would be without Jimmy’s play this season. With Rose out of multiple games, as well as key players Jimmy Butler has stepped his offensive game and filled the gap nicely.
Tim Hardaway Jr. had a team high 23 pts for the New York Knicks. Stoudemire added 16 pts, while Aldrich had 13 pts and Calderon threw in 12pts.
Up Next for Chicago: At Memphis Friday, where the Gasol brothers go head to head.
Bulls (15-9)- 86
Hawks (17-7)- 93
There would be no game winning fall away three at the buzzer for “Jimmy Jordan” this time around vs Atlanta. Although, Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson did everything they could to keep the Bulls win streak alive, however they had little help from the rest of the Bulls. Chicago would score less than 90 points for just the 3rd time this season. Jimmy Butler led all scorers with 22 points and was his normal “Jimmy Butler” self. Although sluggish at times defensively he was the go to guy on the offensive end for Chicago and kept them in this one. Taj Gibson added 15 points and a season high 17, making this his 4th double-double this season.
Rose and Hinrich had bad outings tonight as Kirk has failed to score in his last 50 minutes of action going 0-7 from the field. Rose went back to Derrick the deferrer. Going 0-7 from beyond the arc and shot 6-21 from the field. Rose’s shots looked flat as did the entire Bulls lineup coming off a back-to-back. As bad as Chicago looked they were within striking distance the entire game, not a loss a Bulls fan should dwell on too long.
Noah sat out his 4th game (ankle) and watched as his Florida teammate Al Horford scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds. Including a jumper that all but sealed the deal late in the 4th quarter. Milsap added 17 points for Atlanta, as Teague and Korver both contributed 12 points a piece.
Up Next for Chicago: A two-day rest before the Knicks come to town on Thursday.
Bulls (15-8)- 93
Heat (11-13)- 75
It was the Mike Dunleavy show, as he lead the game with 22 points (19 in the 3rd) to lead Chicago to the big win over the Miami Heat. The game was sloppy and a struggle offensively for both teams in the first half as the Bulls took a 39-32 lead to the locker room. But, the sloppy play would end there for Chicago, as they came out swinging first in the 3rd quarter led by Dunleavy.
Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler failed to do much in this game, as Rose took 3pts into the 4th quarter before knocking down a few shots and becoming more aggressive. Rose would end the game with 15pts on 6-14 shooting (1-3 from 3) on 3 assist and 2 rebounds. The early foul trouble really hindered Rose from getting it going early, picking up his 2nd foul with just over 5 min left in the 1st. He would sit out for the remainder of the first and over 6 minutes in the 2nd.
Jimmy wasn’t knocking down shots, but as he has done all season, got it done at the FT line attempting 10 free throws and finishing with 17 points 7 rebounds 5 assists and 2 steals. Best stat of the night for Jimmy, was looking at DWade’s stats. Wade was held to 6 points with 5 turnovers through 3 quarters before getting “garbage time” buckets in the 4th. Wade would finish with 17.
Taj Gibson would add 15 pts and 9 rebounds filling in for the injured Noah. Pau would stop his streak of double-double games, as he finished with 9 and 9.
Luol Deng has yet to beat the Bulls since being traded in January, but certainly did his part in this one. Deng would finish with 17 points and 10 rebounds, for his second double-double of the season.
Up next for Chicago: A trip to Atlanta to take on the 3rd place Hawks.
Bulls (14-8)- 115
Trail Blazers (17-6)- 106
Derrick Rose scored a season high 31 points as the Bulls defeated the Trail Blazers 115-106. Portland was 10-0 vs the east coming into the matchup with Chicago. After struggling to get in rhythm this season and settling for 3-point attempts, Rose attempted 22 or his 24 shots inside of the arc. He would add 5 assists to go along with his best outing so far this season.
Aaron Brooks and Nikola Mirotic came off the bench to add some offensive fire power and support Rose. During the 2nd quarter it was the bench that would get the Bulls the lead. Chicago’s bench outscored Portland’s 40-15 in this game proving this bench is something to be excited about. Brooks finished with 17 (12 in the 4th), while Mirotic would add 15 of his own with 9 rebounds.
Pau Gasol recorded his 8th straight double-double scoring 13 points and adding 10 rebounds. Taj Gibson, who got the start for the injured Joakim Noah (ankle), also added a double-double of his own with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jimmy Butler had somewhat of a quiet game scoring 11 points with 11 rebounds. He to take a step back this game with Rose being so aggressive and attacking Portland often.
Aldridge and Lillard would have huge games themselves, both scoring 35 a piece, but it was a two-man show for Portland. The only other Trail Blazer to score double digits was Wesley Matthews, with 10.
Next up for Chicago: A trip to Miami, to take on DWade and the Miami Heat.
Nets (8-12)- 80
Bulls (13-8) 105
After coming off his second worst outing this season, Derrick Rose finished the night with 23pts (8-15), 4 rebounds, to go along with 4 assists. Rose showed flashes of his old self, scoring in traffic off floaters, drives, and eventually led to a few 3 pointers dropping. After being called out by coach Thibs for “deferring his shot” Rose answered by attacking early and often.
Jimmy Butler continued his solid play adding 18pts and 5 rebounds, not to mention his stifling defense. Jimmy has scored double digits in every game but one this season. An almost lock for to make his first All-Star appearance this season.
Gasol added his 13th double-double of the season (7th straight), with 16 pts and 16 rebounds. Proving he was a perfect fit for this team this offseason.
Warrirs (17-2)- 112
Bulls (12-8)- 102
Jimmy Butler and Pau Gasol did everything in their power to lead the Bulls to victory. Jimmy would finish with 24pts while Pau Gasol would add 22. The duo of Pau and Jimmy have proven throughout the season to be the Bulls go to guys in order to get the win. Something that a lot of Bulls fans may be surprised at. The Derrick Rose struggle continued this game as he finished with 9 points on 2/11 shooting and 1/7 from behind the arc. Rose doesn’t look like he is anywhere near the player he needs to be in order for this team to advance far into the playoffs.
The Bulls would turn the ball over 22 times while just getting 11 takeaways of their own. Coming into tonight the “Splash Brothers” of Curry and Thompson were the ones everybody’s mind. But it was Draymond Green’s spectacular play and game high 31pts on 7/11 shooting behind the arc that would prove the difference in this one. Curry would finish with 19 and Thompson added in his usual 24.
Bulls: (12-7) 102
Hornets: (4-15) 95
Bulls comeback after their brutal loss the night before to the Dallas Mavericks. Beating the Hornets 102-95. After playing 50 minutes the night before Pau Gasol may have looked sluggish at times, but sure filled the stat sheet with 19pts and 15 rebounds. Mirotic, who has received key minutes for Chicago following the loss of Taj Gibson has been doing an excellent job fitting in. He would end up with 11pts and 12 rebounds, on his way to his 4th double-double of the season.
Mavericks: (14-5) 132
Bulls: (11-7) 129
Bulls go down to the Dallas Mavericks 132-129 in Double Overtime. The play of the game happened as the “gritty one” Kirk Hinrich fouls Monta Ellis with 1.2 seconds remaining in regulation on a 3-point shot! Monta would convert all three FT attepts to tie the game. Rose missed a 3 at the end of regulation that would have given Chicago the win. The Bulls were up by 5 with just 1:40 left in the fourth quarter but failed to hold on to that lead. In OT Rose would redeem himself with a clutch 3-point floater as time expires to send the game to its 2nd overtime. Dallas proved to be too much for the Bulls in that 2nd OT as they would prevail to the victory over Chicago. Next up for the Bulls will be the Charlotte Hornets in a back to back game.
